Zombie Talkies - Bloodfest in Bollywood

Late 2008 inkbrushnme started discussing this concept with iRock of illustrating a zombie graphic novel for them. Which would be the first attempts of breaking through into the zombie genere in Indian context. Over next few weeks the script was finalized parallel to a zombie feature film iRock has been making.
In another eight nine months, the pages were inked and colored by our studio along with a lot of RedBull & alcohol, we were able to explore so much with the narrative progression. Hundreds of hours of blood burning and then the Bloodfest was ready for you guys.
A lot of design and layout liberties were taken to make the story look quirky, representing Bollywood. The story involved so many characters which were developed with such precision by the writers. For us, it was very important that the comic book pages made justice and elevate the whole experience of blood, gore and zombie extravaganza. The property was later on published by Pop Culture publishing. Hope you like it and enjoy reading the graphic novel.

Visual Developement of Ramayana the theatrical by Inkbrushnme Studios

It has been a fun ride for last few months, we have designed almost 25 characters and their costumes, prosthetics, customized weapons and props for a gran theatrical. This theatrical is one of its kind and a dream project for all of us involved in it. Now, most of the designs are ready and all of them have gone in making. The music of the entire theatrical is being made, actors are pumping up their muscles and working out hard on their dialogues, directors are on their toes making this dream project, dreamlike!

here is a video of its teaser that we cut, the music though is a reference track.

The acceptance of comic books in India has gone through a major change in last few years because of social networks and the new generation has been looking at alternative entertainment and careers.
My approach towards taking up assignments has changed over the period of time and I look for projects and collaborations where the product has a tangible value than a week long communication that fades away in Indian daylight.
This strategy of Pepsodent to extend Pappu and Pappa, their marketing and advertising campaign, to comic books and distribute along with the toothpaste have helped comic books in India reach a few lac houses, with a minimum circulation of 15lac units across the country. Arguably, the largest number of comic books ever distributed in India. Comic books will reach houses where they wont spend money to buy a comic book otherwise and contribute in the awareness of the medium.

The stories for the books were simple and were penned down for wide spread masses and had a lot of scope for making them visually stunning. This scope had a size limitation which was half of A5, for the offer to be cost efficient to the client. Most difficult of the process was to get shahrukh khan's character right and keep the comic bright, kitsch and appealing.

I am grateful to the entire team at Lowe, Zeth, Sushant, Shruti, Puneet, etc and ofcourse Kaustubh Kamat who helped me out with the process.

story within a story - The Storyteller

Story within a story narrative technique has its ancient roots and One Thousand and One Nights is one of the examples of such narrative techniques. Puffin - Penguin approached me with their interpretation of the Arabian Nights written by Anushka Ravishankar. The story was divided in a few chapters and the editor had picked up some key visuals for interior illustrations but i still had freedom to pick up other scenarios to depict. as the title said the storyteller i wanted to show the Queen indulged in telling the story to her King so she can live for another day and another night she would continue the incomplete tale. Such a beautiful plot and so on the cover it is Scheherazade telling a tale to ME. another fantasy lived, isnt that the best part of this profession!! you can project yourself wherever you want to.
The original tales are quiet erotic and since this version is meant for kids, the eroticism was edited and simplified for their primary audiences, otherwise every illustration would have had me as the central idea living the arabian fantasies till the book runs out of editions... eternity in a way!
The interior illustrations are purely Black&White for a simple reason that there are infinite tales happening in one tale so to keep the simplicity and depth in the visuals, this technique was chosen.
They have a little seriousness but also are witty and make your eyes travel to catch the details quiet similar to the words written in the book.

Moon, Ramu and I - children's book for Katha

Moon, Ramu and I, a book recently completed by Therefore Design for Katha. They comissioned me to visualize and illustrate the story in most interesting way possible. Elements in this story were unusual and so is their expedition to reach the moon. An adventure led by a dog [ramu] and a cranky little girl [i] who talks to ramu, later joined by her grandpa and amma.
Initially the main character was designed as a mouse keeping a back story of mice's fascination for the moon as it looks like cheese to him, thanks to Tom&Jerry. The plot was not approved by the client. i still feel mouse would hv been an interesting element in the story as it brings a lot of possibilities in which he could have performed throughout the book. We tried hard to convince publisher to make Ramu a mouse but that did not work out, the rough sketches have Ramu as a mouse! you can see the difference.

Also 'i' was a boy first. I am sharing with you guys a small part of the process, the initial doodles done as i read the story and the way characters came to me, a lot of alterations happened as we brainstormed further.

I wanted kids to interact with this book, rotate, explore details, travel inside the story as they would dream, which have no logics or science applied! So began the explorations and layouts. Layouts are always stimulating as you see a story progression getting another dimension, a visual delivery, after a major visual pregnancy of thoughts and brainstormed ideas! Deciding on a color palette was little dicy as events in the story happen at night, so the moon was shown a full moon balancing the darkness and giving it a fun look. I wanted to use Idli texture for the moon but didnt work all that powerful and then Van Gogh happened. :D

Linkin Park Tour Visuals - Narrative Progression

i was blown away when i read the subject of an email, i was contacted by the studio which was handling projection narratives for Linkin Park for their forthcoming tour during the launch of their new album - a thousand suns. the brief was to come up with a new illustrative style which signifies their music and since this album included a major heavy metal integration, the art needed to be grunge and dark. i choose to keep the illustrations abstract to a good extent and intuitively drew all that came to me, chester benningtons portrait, beatmixing, vocals, i let myself become a visualization equalizer. I did not get to listen to the new tracks although i asked for, but legal obligations.., so went ahead with their old hits and later on i got a seq of the songs they were playing and the tracks i was asked to work on.

this was the list:

4. One Step Closer [climax track]

these five tracks were spread in four acts during the show, there were many more guys who collaborated for the event aswell, so of their 22 tracks, i was able to work on 5! YAY!

and so i am sharing some of the work i created for Linkin Park almost six months after completion as my contract got over. I hvnt got to see any of their concerts neither any documentation of where and how the illustrations were used. these are just a few of them.

the physical and emotion destinations have always tricked me as you feel like settling below a waterfall
and the restless mind flows along with the waterfall down the main stream of the huge river.

Mind takes me through the Himalaya and is lost and frost.
i need my sketchbook and doodle instruments to find myself. i find more colors and dry pastels dancing

I will be a lost traveller, i like it that way and thats when i realize fragmented facets about myself.
but i never meant to hurt anyone intentionally, not even the birds i went over while riding.
the dead dogs i pitied when they were lying across the highways. I didnt mean to hurt you dear mountains when i smoked a cigarette in the purest air. it was just me letting my unheard feeling out, i was out of words just by looking at your beauty which was so erotic, enigmatic and exotic.

DawaDaru : Mocha Mojo, Bandra, highlights!

And the panic began for the afternoon event!! We had some new electronica tracks and psychedelic bhajans for the groove and the most appropriate zone was created at Mocha Mojo, Bandra. A special thanks to Utsa and Videsha the Leaping windows duo with their support this evening became even more colorful!

This one was special for us as we shared our very first offering as a compilation of selected art work that was displayed by outer space at Mocha.and compositions. DOSE1 illustrated the colours of krishna as we see them everyday and it was a beautiful journey across our canvas, beat syncing to the sounds of electro soul Bhajans.

The Best part of the event was the involvement of the audience as they were absorbing the live performance and were indulging in their personal activities and one could experience the vibes and the spiritual exchanges. It was an informal experience as you enjoy what you do in public and their involvement of understanding the intentions DawaDaru made it richer.

so began the 4 hour long voyage of DawaDaru, 2 canvases, three performers and a lot of energy.

so inkbrushnme studios was finally registered a few months back!! in 2005

i decided to have a studio which will specialize in illustration. as time passed by

i have been lucky enough to have worked with some great people, design studios, ad agencies, production houses and they have become more than great friends, mentors, beer pals and a continuous pool of inspiration. it always has been pleasure working and collaborating with them on various levels of challenges making zombies, creating comics, doodling, designing mascots, dawadaru-ing, painting streets,walls, canvases, collecting trash and animating, etc!

Phew!! the year really ended well. Amongst everything from past few days, few moments which i remember are about cutting my Beard and becoming younger by atleast couple o years so the security agencies of this country do not consider me as a terrorist. then was a a period spent in Goa where it was doodle addiction and the High still continues like never before. Along came couple of roadtrips and off-season rainfalls. Then was the Avatar High. A film which got back my lost child and everytime when i watch Avatar cheering Na'Vi's... I am so motivated. the most amazing film, film experience i have had after Godfather. I leave this space on one and onlyNew Year Resolution, Avoid Plastic usage as much as I can.

Indrasmriti is a small attempt towards remembering the most respected god from the Rigved, who is no longer worshipped as a god nor there exists a temple of him. The title speaks all about the project- remembering Indra, once again in today’s era.The idea originated as an opportunity for visualizing the dynasty of Indra. But as the time travelled more and more mysteries about the Vedic and the Hindu sanskriti were revealing. The thought of Indra was no longer an idea. It took a shape of its own.

It started evolving and revealing itself. Of course, the method which I followed made it possible.

This evolving and revealing process is never ending. As we can see numerous icons of Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha, Ram, and just by looking at them we can state the icon. We tend to understand the character and recognize them. But Indra’s character / icon is not so visible through Hindu iconography.I have travelled from the Vedas to the Hinduism a journey of 5000 years, which I must say was the most exciting experience of my entire career so far. MY hard disk crashed. the worst tragedies u come across in ur life. i am in a process to recover it...in due course of time. i got a new hdd, for time being, working over it. so scanned a few sketches n thought of updating the blog. have been waiting to update it since a long time... time is timeless. long time is even more timeless. don't u think so? and this time has inspired me. so i wast time in doodling. and some time cribbing over "segate" a brand that makes so called good hdd drives. but useless in my case. i am n useless case, my mom usually says that. so i thought of buying an external casing for my hdd. but guess what....EVEN THAT PROVED TO BE USELESS...!!!! this proves nothing but useless technologies n my useless logic's.

so just enjoy my illustrations n if u feel like using ur hdd to comment..pls do that. guys, donot buy hard disks. thy are usless.

these are how pune(pune, a place in maharashtra from where i come from. my native. a small and beautiful city with small n unhealthy roads) roads are. i know i am talking completely out of context. but being out of context is a context itself. but who knows a context? please explain it to me. please do come contextual enquiry about context. and also about pune roads. the cycle, early mornin, i was it n sketched in 15-20 seconds , just added a cat near the cycle with milk container. my city is full of cats. so i added a cat in the traffic scene also. that doesn't mean that i like em. OK guys, irrelevancy is increasing here, Ill go.

...nothing is new in it...most of us feel that way... to be like a bird....roam the 'free way' where some like me dont exactly know where this freeway is going... unknown of wether it revolves or rotates or fades in or fades out or if it is a straight cut or The End. well i only know one thing bout it and i can proove that its a cycle or the above mention words...are the true words? well....then words take me to so many complex questions, and further into complex answers which lead to even more complexities...and this is the time when i take my pencil and paper and just be myself. and i love to be in a phase when my pencil speaks....because it has never led me to any complex confusions about the life. it says to me ....that life is beautiful when i m around wit u and is always wit me. this is the time when i actually fly...with thoughts and lines and doodles and scribbbbbles and that is me ....inkbrushnme. i m in the sky...already! but there is other side of me too...here it is...lightcameranme! :D
